An 80’s Brick Building Refurbed to be a Light Open Family Home.

Through the process of renovating a family home, creating larger open plan living areas by building into an existing garage, the design devised a pared-back approach to invite a greater sense of light and spaciousness.

Unlocking the home’s true potential, the renovation has facilitated long sightlines throughout, meaning young children can be seen at all times. This apparent theme of openness is countered by floating concrete stairs, offering an intriguing division of space. The warmth of timber shelving, flooring, seating and other furniture balances the sharp concrete divide and offers further material layering.

The selected tones serve as a deliberately neutral base for the design, so that furniture and other styled items may be substituted easily as the tastes of the family evolve in time. In this instance, the collaboration with local artists and furniture makers to provide colour through form and to reflect a quiet simplicity, assisted in providing the finishing touches to the project.
